Salmon Run Bear Camp Expeditions

Brown Bear with a Sockeye Salmon

Small-group camping among Alaska’s brown bears in Katmai during the salmon run.

The Salmon Run Experience

Each summer, Katmai National Park and Preserve’s rivers fill with returning salmon heading to their spawning grounds, drawing coastal brown bears from across the region. This seasonal convergence creates one of Alaska’s most concentrated bear viewing opportunities. Our small-group guided camping expeditions are timed to the peak of the salmon run, offering extended, unrushed days observing bears fishing, foraging, and interacting along river corridors and open tundra.

From our remote backcountry base camp, we travel on foot in small groups across tundra, rivers, and established bear trails—prioritizing patience, positioning, and time in the field to support meaningful wildlife photography and quiet observation alike, while giving bears the space to live undisturbed. Unlike fly-in day trips, our multi-day format lets us follow shifting bear patterns, adapt to weather and river conditions, and stay present for changing light, unfolding behavior, and deeper learning. Evenings return us to camp for shared meals and reflection, guided by a safety-first approach rooted in ecological awareness and deep respect for Katmai’s wild residents.

A Typical Day

Each day begins at our remote backcountry camp with a relaxed breakfast and the option to head out early to capture the golden-hour light on rivers, creeks, and wide-open tundra. Coastal brown bears move through the waterways and surrounding landscapes, fishing, foraging, and interacting—offering unparalleled opportunities for photography and wildlife observation.

Guests enjoy a fluid, unhurried schedule, settling into thoughtfully chosen viewing areas or returning to camp to rest, review images, or warm up before heading back out. Guides position the group safely, share practical photography tips, and provide insights into bear behavior and ecology, helping guests anticipate subtle actions and capture unique moments. Throughout the day, we move between river corridors, overlooks, and tundra as bear activity and lighting shift, allowing for extended observation and dynamic photographic opportunities.

Evenings return us to camp for shared meals, reflection, and optional golden-hour walks, letting guests experience the landscape in a different light. Every moment is guided by safety, respect for wildlife, and the group’s interests, creating a multi-day experience where photography, observation, and immersion in Katmai’s wild landscapes are fully integrated.
